How we test acupressure mats

Five properties decide whether an acupressure mat suits you. Here is each one, and how the SpikeRest mat answers it.

Our criteria

1. A size that covers where you want it. A mat is only useful if it reaches the areas you want to work on. The SpikeRest mat measures 26 × 15.7 × 0.8 in (66 × 40 × 2 cm): lying down, it covers you from the neck to the lower back, and standing, it takes two feet side by side. It is a compact format, smaller than full-length mats, which is also what lets it roll into its carry bag.
2. A cover that comes off. A mat lives on the floor and touches bare skin, so the cover has to come off for cleaning. The SpikeRest cover is fabric, closes with velcro, and slides off a removable foam insert. The cover is the part you wash; the foam insert and the spike disks are wiped by hand and never go in a washing machine. Every part air-dries fully before the velcro closes again.
3. Spike disks across the whole surface. The pressure comes from small plastic disks with pyramid-shaped points. On the SpikeRest mat they are white on all four colors, Navy Blue, Gray, Green and Purple: the color changes the fabric, not the feel.
